Why early treatment matters?

Early orthodontic care does more than align teeth – it lays the foundation for lifelong oral health and wellbeing. Between the ages of 6 and 12, the jaw is still developing and easier to guide, making this period ideal for identifying and correcting subtle imbalances. At this age, we can also intervene early to preserve space for permanent teeth and optimise airway and functional development — outcomes that become more complex with age.

Growth & Early Guidance

Gentle interventions to support natural development in children and pre-teens.

  • Early Orthodontics: subtle, preventive care starting as early as age 6, guiding jaw development and avoiding future issues.

  • Functional Appliances: devices that influence jaw position and muscle function for optimal growth.

  • Habit Correction: addressing thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting and other habits that impact facial development.

  • Myofunctional Therapy: targeted support for breathing, swallowing, and muscle tone.

The Swiss Orthodontic Society recommends a first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. At this age, we can detect potential issues in jaw growth or tooth eruption early—even before all permanent teeth have appeared. Your general school is usually the first to assess if orthodontic treatment is needed.

Early treatment (also called Phase I) can guide jaw growth, improve bite alignment, and create space for permanent teeth. It can also help prevent speech, breathing, and posture issues linked to oral development.
Furthermore, correct breathing through the nose is a basic prerequisite for the correct and natural development of the jaw bases.
If your child breathes through the mouth, a visit to the orthodontist is advisable and helpful.

Common signs include difficulty chewing, thumb sucking beyond age 5, crowded or misplaced teeth, early or late loss of baby teeth, or a noticeable overbite or underbite. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to provide an assessment.

Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend removable plates, aligners, interceptive appliances (like expanders), or braces. Our goal is always to choose the gentlest and most effective option for their age and stage of development.

Most children adapt quickly. Some tightness or tenderness is normal at the beginning, but children usually get used to their braces within a few days. We provide tips and support to make the adjustment period smooth.

Yes — but please make sure to book separate time slots for each child. This ensures we can give each of them the full attention they deserve during their consultation. If you need help coordinating the times, feel free to contact us directly.
